“I’m in America, baby!”

22 Feb

I have a Ukrainian exchange student.

I asked her recently as she came up to me, “Are you following the fighting in the Ukraine? It’s all over the news.”

She nodded. “Yes.”

“What do you think of it?”

Her face grew serious. “I feel bad because I don’t care as much as I should about it.” I was about to say something else when she shouted, “I’m in America, baby!” She thrust her arms into the air as if in triumph. Her arms quickly came down and her tone changed. “Mr. Olson? Can I go to the bathroom?”
